Welcome to Discover Belonging
Research for Human Belonging: Theory and Experience led to a new view of our desire for a sense of belonging as a factor in finding and shaping our identity - knowing who we are and who we want to become.
Knowing who you are is the starting point for finding a sense of belonging. But, our desire for sense of belonging also powerfully shapes the "self" that we become.
Our level of fear and anxiety increases when our sense of belonging is absent or threatened. Building a more stable foundation for our sense of belonging gives us greater self-confidence in our place as part of our environment.
Leadership engagement has a significant impact on employee or membership commitment. Understanding the Six Critical Elements of a Sense of Belonging helps leaders build strong relationships between their organizations and employees or members.
If recruitment efforts ignore the organization's and the applicant's true beliefs, values, and goals, hiring practices can result in disillusioned employees and high turnover rates. Building on more than financial and talent considerations can lead to a more stable organization.
When would an employee stay with a company even if offered more financial compensation elsewhere? When their work means more to them than just financial compensation. Belonging and Retention

Doctoral Work
"Dr. Drent did groundbreaking scholarly work on his dissertation Human Belonging: Theory and Experience. He is a diligent and meticulous individual who has a flair for synthesizing ideas from varied sources. His dissertation was a thoughtful investigation into the phenomenon of belongingness, an integral consideration for students of leadership. His synthesis which connects the idea of salient identity to an individual’s connection with an external agency contains ideas which can be applied to organizational challenges such as retention and academic success."
